The Fire Remembers

Every blade began in the fire my brother led me to.

The story

The story

I have made blades for men who meant to use them, and I have buried some of those same men.

The summer I was seventeen, I mended latches in Tessaro and knew nothing of the world beyond the city wall. Then part of that wall came down. Voren wanted me to look at a mark he had found in the stone. I didn’t bother. He went through the gap alone, and I went after him.

On the other side I found danger waiting and no trace of my brother. Injured and stranded, I had to depend on people who had never heard of the home I was trying to get us both back to. Ferronor had roads I didn’t know, laws I didn’t understand, and men who asked too many questions about where I had come from. Every trail went cold. Every answer came with a price.

In Ferronor, what happens in the world leaves something behind. A battlefield can hold Grief. A man who spends his life refusing to give in might leave Defiance. The Forcari gather what remains and bind it into armour and steel, and every piece carries something of what made it.

To survive among them, I had to learn their world faster than it could swallow me, and form bonds with things I could never have imagined.

Voren was still out there.

I would find him, whatever it cost.

The first book in a dark fantasy series of forged power, buried secrets, and a brother’s promise.

A life remembered from the forge

A life remembered from the forge

Calix tells this story looking back on the summer he was seventeen. That distance gives his account room for regret and reflection, even as his younger self struggles to understand what is happening around him. The novel follows the work of learning and the growth of friendships alongside its encounters with violence. Moments of recovery and ordinary companionship give the danger something human to threaten.

Is this a standalone novel?

No. The Fire Remembers opens a dark fantasy series. It is the beginning of a larger journey, rather than a standalone adventure.

What kind of fantasy is it?

It is dark portal fantasy: a personal search leads from Calix’s home into another world. Craft, apprenticeship and growing competence are important parts of the story, alongside unfamiliar magic and escalating danger.

How does the magic work?

Magic draws on impressions left by lives, places and events. The Forcari learn to bind these into crafted objects. Training and the quality of the work matter, so understanding the craft is part of earning its power.

Who tells the story?

Calix narrates in the first person, looking back from later life on the events that began when he was seventeen.

Is there a content note?

The novel contains graphic violence, torture, bereavement and strong language.
